  • No trash man was ever as eager as the students of West Side Elementary were Tuesday.
They literally raced each other to bits of litter they found on the streets surrounding the school and at Harrisburg Township Park.
It was Earth Day and these kids were working the program, hard.
Kindergarten teacher Lindsey Clarida walked her class to the park and left a wake of clean streets behind.
“We had a classroom discussion of Earth Day before we started walking this morning,” she said. “When we get back to school all the bags will be dropped in the dumpster.”
Clarida said this is the third year the Parent Teachers Organization has provided the bags for Earth Day.
Thia Moorman, 6, said the purpose of Earth Day is, “picking up trash.”
Asked why we should pick up trash, Jayden Trammell, 6, shot his eager hand in the air and said, “To keep the gutters clear. To keep the earth happy.”
Kooper Goodson, 6, said, “If we don’t pick up the trash we will be walking on trash every day.”
The whole class knew that “litter” was another name for trash and they knew what a “litterbug” was.
Angelina Carr voiced her strong opinion of littering.
    “It’s terrible,” she said.
