  • Bulldogs rally past Patriots with big fifth inning

  • Sykes Thompson tossed his second complete game against Massac County in less than a week as Harrisburg came from behind to beat the Patriots, 5-2, Monday afternoon at Dorris Heights.
    The Bulldogs (8-6, 2-2 SIRR Ohio) scored three times in the bottom of the fifth inning to take the lead for good and tacked on another insurance run in the sixth for good measure.
    Massac County committed two errors defensively in the bottom of the fifth that aided the Harrisburg comeback. HHS sent eight batters to the plate that inning and had two infield hits.
    Thompson (3-1), who tossed a one-hit shutout at Metropolis last Wednesday,struck out two and walked a batter, while scattering five hits Monday afternoon.
    Massac County (6-7, 1-4) took a 1-0 lead after the top of the first on a groundout from Ashton McDuffe. A solo homer from second baseman Luke Wieneke in the top of the second put Massac County in front 2-0.
    Harrisburg got a run back in the home half of the second on a groundout from Nick Davis that scored Ryan Luce.
    Luce finished 2-for-3, while Davis ended 1-for-3 with a RBI.
    Bryce Emery, Matthew Phipps and Brennan Street also had hits for the Bulldogs. Street and Thompson each added RBI’s.
    Harrisburg has won five of its past six games and is 5-0 at home. The Bulldogs are scheduled to host Carmi Wednesday and Benton Thursday. Massac County travels to Herrin Tuesday afternoon.
