  • Kestner Wallace, age 93 of Womble Mountain, south of Harrisburg, passed away Thursday morning, April 17, 2014, at his residence.

  • Kestner Wallace, age 93 of Womble Mountain, south of Harrisburg, passed away Thursday morning, April 17, 2014, at his residence.
    He was born Aug. 31, 1920, to William and Verba Wallace. He married the love of his life, Evelyn Green, on Aug. 22, 1950. She preceded him in death on Sept. 3, 2006.
    Kestner was a Saline County educator for 41 years, teaching first in various one-room schoolhouses and then serving as the first and only principal of Independence School for 30 years.
    After serving in the Navy in World War II, he received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Southern Illinois University. He attended Rudement Social Brethren Church his entire life and taught its men’s Sunday school class for 30 years.
    After retirement, Kestner began writing short stories, which were published in the “Springhouse” magazine and later in two books: “A Dollar the Hard Way” and “Blessed Beyond Measure.”
    Kestner was loved by all who knew him, but especially by his family. He is survived by his two children, LeAnn Wallace of Raleigh, N.C. and Ray Wallace of Harrisburg; two brothers, Byrum and Gaylord Wallace; a sister-in-law, Bette Wallace; five grandchildren, Blair Zenker, Blake Walker, Caitlin Rowland, Kelsey Wallace and Jillian Wallace; three great-grandchildren, Evie, Gigi and Jackson Zenker; and numerous cousins, nephews and nieces.
    He was preceded in death by a brother, Victor Wallace; and two sisters, Mabel Baldwin and Hazel Stanislawsky.
    Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, April 21, 2014, at Reed Funeral Chapel in Harrisburg. The Rev. LeRoy Hicks and the Rev. Barry Bascom will officiate. A private burial will follow at the Wallace Family Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday, April 20, at Reed Funeral Chapel in Harrisburg.
