  • While protestors against Peabody Energy still control a plot of ground outside Brookings Hall on the Washington University campus in St. Louis, a group of about 15 protestors gathered outside the student center of Southern Illinois University Thursday morning.
The SIU protest group wants the school to divest itself of any ties to Peabody and timed its protest with an SIU Board of Trustees meeting.
“We are protesting in solidarity with the Washington University students,” said Georgia de la Garza.
Washington University students and some alumni are opposed to Peabody CEO Gregory Boyce sitting on that university’s board of trustees and the university supporting clean coal research in the face of climate change.
Glenn and Judy Kellen of Rocky Branch were active in the SIU protest — Glenn, carrying signs; Judy speaking with the trustees individually.
The demonstration was peaceful if a little too loud.
“I am so horse I can barely speak,” said Jennifer Dumbris, who was holding a sign.
SIU is heavily supported by grant each year from the coal industry, said de la Garza.
