  • Harrisburg ran its season long winning streak to three games and picked up its first baseball conference victory in the process with a 14-0 win in five innings at Massac County Wednesday afternoon.
Junior Sykes Thompson tossed a complete game one-hitter and struck out seven. At one point, Thompson struck out five straight Patriot hitters. The right-hander also had a streak in which he retired nine batters in a row.
The Bulldogs were able to score in every inning, including seven times in the top of the fifth when a dozen batters came to the plate.
Junior Matthew Phipps collected three hits and drove in three runs. Sophomore Noah Vallette added a pair of hits and also drove in three.
“I just think we’re getting better all the time,” said Harrisburg coach Jay Thompson. “Our kids are practicing extremely well. We’re just getting better. I just like where we are.”
Harrisburg is certainly playing its best baseball of the spring. The Bulldogs have all shutout wins during their three-game winning streak and have outscored their opponents 36-0 over that span.
Thompson, Nick Davis, Bryce Emery, Ryan Luce, Brennan Street, Aaron Johnson and Tyler Sullivan also had at least one hit for Harrisburg.
Senior Dalton Mitchell had the only hit for Massac County (6-5, 1-2). It came to start the bottom of the first inning.
The Bulldogs (6-5, 1-1 SIRR Ohio) are scheduled to play another road conference game at West Frankfort Thursday before hosting Marion in one single varsity game Saturday at 11 a.m. at Dorris Heights.
