  • Harrisburg’s Alexa Burtis and Kelsey Hobbs’ summer just got a whole lot hotter.
The Bulldog hoopsters took part in a competition at Springfield late last month where their play caught the eye of some coaches and peers.
The sophomore duo took part in a competition at Springfield where Burtis won a 3-point shooting contest, while Hobbs won the free throw shooting contest.
The two competed with and against some of the best high school girls in Illinois and for their efforts the two received a letter from the USA Junior National Committee to play in Columbus, Ohio in July to play in the International Sports Festival.
“It was a great experience to get out of southern Illinois and play different competition,” Burtis said. “No one was backing down and going right at each other.”
Hobbs said the competition was as good as advertised, but credited her training this past year in helping her stand out above the rest.
“The competition was really good,” Hobbs said. “I had to guard down low which was kind of different. This past year, I played some down low in the post, so I feel like that really helped me.”
The two will represent Illinois against other states and along the way taking the necessary steps in keeping the Harrisburg girls’ basketball program on the right track.
“I’m very proud of them and their opportunity,” HHS head coach Jake Stewart said. “They have both improved each of the past two seasons and have figured out how to become complete players, not just shooters.
“They will be asked to take on bigger roles this upcoming season and the opportunity they have this summer will only help them. I’m very excited about our future with the two of them at the helm.”
Aside from their experience this summer, both have their sights set on the upcoming season.
“I’m excited about the upcoming season and playing an even bigger role,” Hobbs said.
Burtis is chomping at the bit for her junior campaign, joining Hobbs as a dual threat and leaders.
“My team and I will work hard to keep things going in a positive direction and get to where we want to be.”
