  • Harrisburg Police have released details on the Tuesday afternoon crash on Poplar Street at state Route 13 near Illinois Youth Center.
Injured in the eastbound vehicle March 4 were Donald and Mary McGan, both 64, of Corydon, Ky. In the Poplar Street northbound vehicle were Frances and James Bruger, both 64 of Harrisburg. All four were transported to hospitals, three to Harrisburg Medical Center — one of whom was later taken to an Evansville, Ind., hospital and one was taken to Evansville from the scene by helicopter.
At the same intersection, in a similar manner, a two-vehicle collision injured both drivers on Feb. 21. There were no passengers in either vehicle on Feb. 21. On Feb. 21, Lyndell Futch, 85, in a 1991 Pontiac, was struck by Jeneffa Prairie, 22, who was eastbound on state Route 13 bypass.
Both accidents occurred in the same manner, as did a third crash Feb. 14.
An eastbound vehicle was proceeding on state Route 13 towards the intersection with Poplar Street when a northbound or southbound vehicle on Poplar Street/Old Route 13 pulled in front of it. The eastbound vehicles struck the northbound or southbound vehicle.
Harrisburg Mayor Ron Crank has requested Illinois Department of Transportation install a traffic light, but IDOT has denied that request stating the intersection does not warrant it — speeding is the contributing factor, according to a letter from IDOT.
Saline County Sheriff Keith Brown maintains the problem is vehicles in turning lanes on state Route 13 can block the Poplar Street drivers’ view of state Route 13 through traffic. Drivers on Poplar Street who glance before crossing may only see a vehicle in the turn lane and proceed into the intersection without having noted another vehicle driving through.
