Due to a reporter's error, the board member who abstained on the voted approving the contract with the Harrisburg Education Association contract was wrong. Jeffrey Drake abstained. The error has been corrected in the online story.
  • Two principals will be sharing superintendent duties for the Harrisburg school district, following action by the board during the Dec. 20 special meeting.
The board unanimously approved East Side Principal Scott Dewar and High School Principal Karen Crank to share duties of interim superintendent following Dennis Smith's resignation effective Jan. 1. They will receive salary increases of $7,500 each.
At the opening of the meeting President Tom DeNeal immediately faced several question from the audience. Third grade instructor Marsha Byas asked DeNeal where she could find information on school secretaries salaries. DeNeal responded that the information Byas sought was in the budget.
Board member Michelle Way said she would be happy to assist Byas in finding the information.
Another instructor, Beth Montfort then had several statements and questions for the board. Montfort questioned if the voluntary salary freeze that the teachers had taken was helping school finances. DeNeal responded that all financial or budgeting assistance was appreciated by the board.
Montfort asked if more teacher firings was in the offing. DeNeal stated that it would appear likely, though no decisions had been made at that time.
Montfort then addressed the board on the effort and service that teachers put forth for their students and the teachers' importance to the district.
"Teachers give 110 percent each and every day," Montfort said. "We (the teachers) are the school district. We are the core of the district."
Following public comments, the board moved into closed executive session to consider the two action items of the evenings agenda.
After a brief executive session, the board resumed the public meeting. The board voted to ratify a one-year contract agreement with the Harrisburg Education Association, with all board members voting yes except for Jeffrey Drake, who abstained. DeNeal then expressed the boards gratitude to the HEA.
"I want to extended our (the board's) appreciation the the leadership of the HEA." DeNeal stated. "The board would look extensively to find budget cuts other than further teacher firings.
"We want to be very open about this and keep good communication going with the HEA."
