  • Meridians super fast start to the season raised plenty of eyebrows Wednesday at the annual seed meeting for the Eldorado Holiday Tournament at Dad's Bar-B-Que.
The Bobcats are off to a 5-0 start to the season after capturing the Vienna Classic earlier, which included a championship win over Massac County.
David Davis, D.J. Weldon, Khouri Powell and Michael Schoffner are the cogs to Meridian's machine so far.
"We go about eight deep and we're not real big, but we're versatile," Meridian head coach Jeff Mandrell said.
Harrisburg, the defending Class 2A State Champions and winners of three straight EHT titles were given the No. 2 seed.
The Bulldogs are 2-0 on the year with wins over neighbors Eldorado and Gallatin County, but have also had a number of games postponed by Mother Nature.
"We're glad to be seeded as high as we are after what we lost last year," Harrisburg head coach Randy Smithpeters said. "I'm happy with the way we have been playing so far and the EHT is always a tough tournament. It's a good tournament and we don't expect anything to come easy. Our goal right now is to work hard and compete."
Massac County, who lost to Meridian in the championship of the Vienna Classic, took home the No. 3 seed, while boasting a 3-2 record.
Fairfield is off to a 3-1 start to the season and grabbed the No. 4 seed.
Fairfield took home the consolation championship last season at the EHT and head coach Scott McElravy brings back a roster nearly intact from last year.
"This is potentially one of the better teams I have ever had," McElravy said.
The Mules' lone loss is to Teutopolis and has wins over Red Hill, Olney and Pinckneyville.
The No. 5 seed went to Union County, Ky., who is in the EHT for just the second year.
Union County knocked off Herrin 42-38 a year ago to take home the fifth place trophy and head coach Nick Chaykowski, will be led by a pair of seniors in Zach Chayowski, a Top-20 point guard in the Bluegrass and Jashaud Fleming.
Anna-Jonesboro, led by head coach Mike Chamness, grabbed the No. 6 spot in the EHT. The Wildcats are 2-1 to start the season.
The last two spots went to Carmi-White County at No. 7 and West Frankfort at No. 8.
The Eldorado Holiday Tournament will start Thursday, December 26 and conclude with the championship game on Saturday, December 28.
