During the regularly scheduled meeting of the Eldorado school board Tuesday evening, Board President Ryan Hobbs was pleased to announce during the financial report his suggested tax levy for the coming year increased only a small amount to 4.1 percent.
"That is not a whole lot different from last year," he noted with observable pride. "I believe we are the lowest in Saline County."
Board members agreed they were the lowest.
"Our estimated assessed value will lose only 1 percent reducing it to $52 million dollars," he continued. "If it weren't for the state reductions in funding, we would be well off."
The board approved the motion to accept the levy and then approved a motion to accept the assessed value.
Next the board approved an application to opt out of the summer lunch program.
This was a procedural necessary each school year for boards wishing to refrain from the state program of offering free lunch to anyone during the summer months said Hobbs after the meeting concluded.
Next, Bill Kittinger, agriculture teacher and FFA advisor for Eldorado High School, gave a report on a recent field trip the National FFA convention in Louisville, Ky.
"The hotel informed us that this convention is the third largest in the country. Only the Democratic and Republican Conventions are larger," said Kittinger.
"The hotel also informed us that our group from Eldorado, Hamilton County, Olney and Edwards County was very well behaved. One of the best groups they had served."
The 2013 National FFA Convention was held at the Freedom Hall of the Kentucky Fair and Exhibition Ceneter in Louisville, Oct. 30 through Nov. 2.
"It is a great opportunity for the students to make friends with FFA members from around the country," said Kittinger. "If you stay in four years in high school there are a lot of scholarship opportunities."
FFA reporter Christian Stanley said there was a tour of Churchill Downs and the Louisville Slugger bat factory. The high school student said he unfortunately missed the tour of Churchill Downs.
Kittinger concluded, "We left with nine and came back with nine. It was a success."
The students were on the road for four days.
School District Architect Ed Kirkhover gave a report on construction plans and progress around the district.
"We have the opportunity to participate in a state matching grant to improve energy efficiency. It is a $250,000 matching grant that we can use to replace the heating and air at Eldorado Elementary. The total cost of the project would be $840,000. But we could replace the heat and air for the gym and cafeteria only and do that for lot less," he said.
Page 2 of 2 - Unable to feel comfortable with an expenditure of over $800,000 the board decided to apply for the grant in order to replace the heat and AC for the gym and cafeteria at the elementary school. The motion to do so was approved.
The board went into executive session and when they completed their discussions of personnel matters, the board went back into open session and approved the resignation of Michelle Bradley as assistant coach for high school girls basketball.
The board approved the hiring of Dolly Mace as a personal aide. The board also approved the hiring of Ashley Griffin as a half-time personal aide. The hirings were for the 2013-2014 school year.
