  • The Pope County Deer Festival opens 7 p.m. Wednesday in downtown Golconda.
    For the 53rd year Golconda Rotary welcomes deer hunters into Pope County for the first shotgun deer season Friday through Sunday.
    Starting 7 p.m. is the Community Church Service under the heated block-long tent that by 10 a.m. Thursday will be filled with craft and food vendors. Tim Green is to direct a Community Choir during the church service.
    Golconda Rotary Thursday morning will be selling the famous Crim Brothers barbecue available by the sandwich, pound or shoulder.
    At 6:30 p.m. Thursday on the stage at is the Baby Photo, Littler Mister and Miss, Mister and Miss and Miss Pre-Teen contests.
    At 7 p.m. Friday is the Deer Festival Queen Contest.
    At 2 p.m. Saturday is the Street Parade.
    There will be street entertainment prior to the parade Saturday, according to the Herald Enterprise. At 12:15 p.m. Kornbread Junction Gang with Phil Morris and Ken Barger will be performing. Other entertainers include the KBJ Singers: Robin and Rick Johnston, Norman Alexander and Flo Dunning with "Little Hank" Mason Ramsey.
    Bands in the parade will be judged. Those wanting to enter the parade may contact Parade Chairman Steve Robbs at (618) 695-2732 or by cell at (618) 559-9847.
