  • Using the mantra that defense wins championship, Eldorado took its first steps toward some hardware with a 62-23 victory over Gallatin County in the season opener Monday night at Duff-Kingston Gymnasium.
Eldorado used some stellar defensive play in the first and second quarters as they took a 35-10 lead into the locker room.
In the third quarter, Eldorado came out with the same defensive pressure and made the turnovers count with a balanced offensive scoring by eight different Eagle players.
"I thought the girls came out and really played well (Monday)," head coach Josh Bradley said. "We had a little first quarter butterflies since it was the first game of the season but we settled down and played really good team basketball."
Kourtney Phillips led the charge with 21 points for Eldorado (1-0), while Erica Graczyk netted 14 points.
The play from Phillips and Graczyk was encouraging for Bradley.
"Phillips and Graczyk really stepped up early for us," Bradley said. "Their leadership is going to be key for us all year long. I thought Taylor (Goodley) stepped and did a good job at the point tonight, she has to play point until we get (Paige) Zertuche back from an ACL injury.
Abby Steed and Taylor Goodley each added eight points, while Jacqlyn Artman finished with four points and Dresdyn Bramlet had three points. Brooklyn Peavler and Riley Duckworth each had two points.
"Artman and Steed did a nice job on the boards for us all night long and had really solid games," Bradley said. "Stafford and Bramlet did a nice job off the bench tonight, something we need from them every night. Overall it was a really good team effort, everybody played for each other and that was really nice to see."
Sidney Ahrens added 11 points for Gallatin County (0-1), while Caitlyn Lynch scored six points. Morgan Roderick, Harlie Turner and Makalyn Smith all had two points.
