  • Carl F. Jackson, 50, of West Frankfort and Harrisburg was killed Thursday night when he apparently jumped in front of a southbound train.
The West Frankfort Police Department received a call about 9:20 p.m. from Union Pacific Railroad reporting a pedestrian accident.
The WFPD said Jackson was in the wooded area of the southwest side of Elm Street when he jumped out of the woods and into the path of the oncoming train.
West Frankfort Police Chief Shawn Talluto said Jackson was struck and thrown about 63 feet. Jackson sustained internal injuries.
Franklin County Coroner Marty Leffler released preliminary autopsy results on Sunday.
Leffler said Jackson's death was due to a high cervical spine fracture due to multiple blunt impact trauma.
He said final autopsy results will not be available until toxicology reports are final. Those reports should be available in four weeks. Alcohol is expected to have been a contributing factor in this case, Leffler said.
Jackson's body was identified on the sidewalk outside Kelly's Lounge. Alcohol was found at the scene.
Jackson recently had contact with law enforcement. On Nov. 7 Jackson was arrested and transported to Franklin County jail on a Franklin County warrant.
