We may rake our lawns a bit begrudgingly but three inmates of the Saline County Detention Center were blowing and gathering leaves with gusto Wednesday morning.
The men were part of a work crew assigned the job of cleaning up the autumn debris around the Harris-Pruett Building.
The weather was perfect for strenuous outdoor work — crisp and sunny. It must have been a welcome change from indoor artificial lighting. Correctional Officer Chuck Welge of the SCDC was supervising the work and said, "After this we will transport the leaves to the city yard."
Workers Darren Jackson, Shawn Milo Lambert and Scott Lee Hoffard appeared to be highly motivated and happy with their three hour break from the Saline County Detention Center.
The weekly maintenance of the Harris-Pruett Building is one of several sites within the city Sheriff Keith Brown directs the inmates. Brown's crew has also "adopted" a handful rural cemeteries for clean up.
