The year was 1988, the Iraq war had just ended, Beetlejuice was all the rage at the movie theaters, Guns N' Roses was rocking it on the radio and Eldorado football won a playoff game.
Fast forward some 25 years later and the Eagles are still searching for that elusive first round playoff win.
After surrendering a 14-point lead Saturday in Clinton County, the Eagles watched as Carlyle scored 29 unanswered points in a 29-14 IHSA Class 2A football playoff victory.
"Our kids played hard and they were ready to play," Eldorado head coach Brandon Hampton said. "I can't say enough about our kids, because that took a lot of guts and courage to come back from life support last week, losing on the road.
"Our kids could have held their heads down and Carlyle is a heck of a football team and we played right there toe-to-toe with them for four quarters, we just didn't get a break or two."
Eldorado (7-3) did get going in a hurry however, putting early drives together that ate up time on the game clock in hopes of slowing down the Indians fast paced offense.
After a 10-play drive to start the game resulted in a turn over on downs, Eldorado got the ball back following a fumble recovery by Braxton Roberts and the Eagles went back to work.
This time, Eldorado capitalized on an 8-play drive that saw Dylan Roberts found the back of the end zone from five yards out with 3:06 to play in the first half. Roberts completed the two-point conversion and Eldorado held an 8-0 lead.
Eldorado then squandered another opportunity to put points on the board when after getting down to the 4-yard line, facing a second down and four, Eldorado fumbled, that led to Dylan Roberts gain of three yards, putting Eldorado in a fourth and one situation at the one yard line, where Eldorado once again, fumbled the football.
Derek Mitchell breathed some new life into the club however, coming away with an interception on Carlyle's next series that resulted in a 9-yard TD run from Tyler Deaton. Despite not converting on the two-point conversion, Eldorado led 14-0.
The Indians were able to put together a quick-strike scoring opportunity, as Billy Cummins from Logan Zachry from 24 yards out with 1:13 to play in the first half, putting the Indians on the board 14-8.
Field position hurt Eldorado in the second half, but none more so than it did when the Eagles kicked the ball off to start the third quarter.
Carlyle (9-1) got a great kick return from Deven Hicks, taking it well inside Eldorado territory. A horse collar penalty called against the Eagles, gave Carlyle the ball at the 10 yard line, where on the first play from scrimmage Hicks scored, giving the Indians their first lead of the game at 14-15 and one they would not relinquish.
Page 2 of 2 - "We tried to play the wind a little bit right there," Hampton said in regards to the second half kickoff. "It just so happened that the wind kind of blew it right to him. We had talked all week about not putting ourselves in a position to let them hit us with the big play, but they did and I thought our kids fought to the very end. Our defense really stepped up and made some plays and offensively, we had some drives inside the 10 yard line that we couldn't sneak in and hurt us, but as a whole, I'm really proud of how our kids played."
Eldorado rushed for 361 yards and the Eagles beat Carlyle in nearly every statistic.
The Eagles had 20 first downs, compared to 10 by the Indians and finished with 356 total yards.
Dylan Roberts closes out his football career hampered by a second half ankle injury and finished with 165 yards on 37 carries. Tyler Deaton had 83 yards on 13 carries and Braxton Roberts rushed nine times for 68 yards. Derek Mitchell had four carries for 27 yards.
