The Carrier Mills-Stonefort school board discussed completion of the elevator installation and reviewed the school crisis management plan during the Oct. 21 meeting.
Superintendent Richard Morgan reported to the board that the elevator project was nearing the finishing point with the target of the third week in November being the expected date for completion. Several small modifications of the installation remain before the elevator is up and running, with the state inspection of the lift mechanism being scheduled for the Nov. 23.
The board reviewed the school crisis management plan in light of the seminar on a school-shooter scenario delivered by Saline County Sheriff’s Deputy Jerod Campbell earlier this month. The board approved the crisis management plan for the grade and high schools.
In other action, the board heard a report from Morgan on the possibility of applying for an Illinois State, 50/50, matching safety grant with a view to upgrading the security camera system at both schools and installing a “Buzz-In” security door system at both schools. The two improvements would be concurrent installations with a monitor for the doors in the office of each school, to allow the secretary to view and permit entry to anyone wishing to enter the schools.
Following a closed session, the board accepted the resignation of Carla Kirkland from the position of Speech Team Coach, Kirkland citing scheduling pressures resulting from her expanded teaching duties as the reason for her resignation.
