  • The Harrisburg High School girls' cross country team took first place at the Class A West Frankfort Regional Saturday, edging West Frankfort and Pope County.
The Bulldogs got 27 team points, beating out West Frankfort (30) and the Pirates (72) as all three advance to Saturday's Sectional at Edwardsville.
Harrisburg's Taylor McDaniel returned to the team after a mid-season injury and finished second with a time of 19:36, while Ashley Cain finished eighth overall with a time of 20:29. Miranda Elders finished in the top 10, turning in a time of 21:05.
Eldorado's Dempsey Hankins placed sixth overall with a time of 20:18 as she is the lone Eagle to qualify for sectionals.
Carrier Mills-Stonefort's Alyssa Binkley had a time of 24:51. It wast the best time of the season for the Wildcat freshman according to head coach Mike Eisenhauer.
On the boys' side, Carrier Mills-Stonefort finished seventh with 187 points and Eldorado was eighth with 192. The Wildcats' seventh place finish got them to the Sectionals as well.
"I was very pleased with the boys advancing to sectionals," Eisenhauer said. To advance to sectionals with only five boys and three of them being freshmen, one sophomore, and one junior is quite an accomplishment.  I thought the boys ran well.  I can't say enough for the way Loren Whiting leads our team.  He runs hard everyday and is a good example for our other runners."
Whiting didn't finish in the top 10, but did turn in a time of 17:57, while Christian Fuller finished with a time of 18:29.
Brody Walker (18:57), Dylan Kyle (19:41) and Jonathan Jaegers (20:27) rounded out the finishes for the Wildcats.
Eldorado's Dillon Sigler and Bret Plunkett qualified for sectionals as Sigler had a time of 18:09 for a 22nd place finish and Plunkett finished 25th with a time of 18:17.
Other times for Eldorado included Richard Graceffa (19:03), Ethan Partridge (19:45), Adam Partridge (21:27) and Ben Partridge (25:56).
