  • The Bomber boys soccer team tallied four goals in Monday's win over Quincy Notre Dame, but it may have been the defense that provided the biggest spark in the victory.
The Raiders continuously hounded the Bomber end, especially late in the match, but Macomb effectively was able to stay in front of Quincy Notre Dame attackers, making quality chances a difficult proposition.
"Defensively, Quincy Notre Dame is tough to defend because they have all kinds of ballplayers," Macomb coach Jeff Moore said. "It was a great team effort, the guys stepped up all the time."
The Raiders loved to attack on the right side of Macomb's backline, testing Liam Adams by trying to go past him with speed, through him with skill or around him with passes and runs.
Adams held strong throughout, funneling the Raider attackers away from the net.
"He (Adams) played very smart, he did not overcommit on his guy," Moore said. "They're very fast but he was with them step for step speed-wise and he did not get out of position," Moore said. "There were a couple times that if he was not thinking, he would have stepped up to stop the ball at midfield but he started dropping immediately and shut down a couple of over the top attacks.
"His discipline on the ball when play 1 v. 1 was excellent, he played that corner well."
Quincy Notre Dame was aggressive in its attack, showing Macomb a four-forward look, increasing the tempo and pressure in the end of the Bombers.
"They pushed two more forwards up, they had four guys not he front line going at us, but we stayed with them until the end," Moore said.
The win was a big one for Macomb (9-5). Not only was it the first time the Bombers have beaten the Raiders, but it was big notch for a Macomb team that has high postseason aspirations.
"This is the kind of high caliber squad we'll have to play right away," Moore said. "(Regional top seed) Peoria Christian will be at their level and anybody we play after, that's why we play these games.
"We went down one goal and came back right away, that shows a lot of maturity but we have enough guise who have gone through this and know you never stop."
