  • The Harrisburg High School football team answered the challenge on the road early Friday night in helping them improve to 3-2 overall and remain unbeaten in Southern Illinois River-to-River Ohio Division Conference play.
Sykes Thompson scored a pair of first half touchdowns and the Harrisburg defense forced the Patriots into five turnovers as the Bulldogs picked up a 28-8 win at Massac County Friday night.
"It's always nice to come down to Massac County and get a win," Harrisburg head coach Jason Roper said "It's a tough place to play. I think we were able to use some of our speed to our advantage. Again, I think this is a situation where our kids are going to learn a lot from this game."
The Patriots beat Harrisburg in nearly every facet of the game Friday night and the contest might have turned out differently had it not been for a second personal foul penalty against Massac County's Dillon Stoner who was then ejected from the game after 164 rushing yards on 10 carries.
Stoner's 80-yard TD run with 6:32 left in the first got Massac County to within eight at 14-6.
Harrisburg gave themselves some more breathing room in the third quarter when Sykes Thompson hooked up with Dustin Lane from eight yards out with 6:20 to play.
A pair of fourth quarter interceptions by Harrisburg's Blake Buchanan and one by Devin Reeder returned 45 yards for a touchdown proved to be the difference maker for the Bulldogs.
"I thought our defense played great," Roper said. "We're in conference play and our kids are excited about that. We're 2-0 and go to Benton Friday for another road game. Hopefully we get a good crowd up there to watch our guys play."
