The Harrisburg High School volleyball team lost in straight sets 25-19 and 25-12 Thursday night at Davenport Gymnasium.
Not one to hand out moral victories, Harrisburg head coach Stephanie Ferrell said her girls, despite not winning, couldn't have played any better against the Red Devils.
"Although we didn't beat them in the first game, we played the best volleyball we have all year," Ferrell said. "Our blockers worked hard to have a combined 13 blocks and two block stuffs and our defense dug out the spikes from Murphysboro's great hitters.
"We just couldn't grab the same momentum in the second game. We gave everything we had in the first game and had nothing left to give. All in all, I am pleased with the way the girls played."
Hayley Thompson led the way with 13-for-14 on hits with three kills and five blocks, while Devan Jones was 6-for-6 on hits with three kills and three blocks. Brantlea Jones had two hits, two blocks and one kill and Whitney Younger two blocks, five hits, four digs and four kills.
Ashley Ferrell finished with a 9-for-9 line on hits with two kills and had four digs. Parker Upchurch finished with eight digs, while Brittany Reynolds went 2-for-3 on hits with one kill and had 21 sets to go with three assists. Malayna Douglas went 15-for-17 on sets and finished with five assists.
The Harrisburg junior varsity team also lost in straight sets, falling 25-14 and 25-14, while the Bulldog freshmen team lost to Murphysboro 25-10 and 25-16.
