  • Those interested in learning more about our area’s forests have an opportunity with the Forestry Field Day 11:30 a.m. Thursday at the Dixon Springs Agricultural Center.
The Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences, part of the University of Illinois College of Agricultural, Consumer, and Environmental Sciences, and the Dixon Springs Agricultural Center invite all interested for an afternoon of learning opportunities and discussion that may change the way people think about and relate to nature and their land, according to a release from the Ag Center.  Free lunch will be provided starting at 11:30 a.m., followed with presentations from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. by experts on weed management, wildlife conservation, and native plants.
The speakers include Dr. Karla Gage, coordinator for the River to River Cooperative Weed Management Area; Matt Springer, part of the Southern Illinois University Cooperative Wildlife Research Laboratory; and Dr. Sonja Lallemand, Extension specialist and horticulture educator for the University of Illinois.
The talks will focus on issues concerning management of private forest and grassland, including how to deal with invasive weeds, the value of private land for conserving imperiled wildlife populations and the benefits of incorporating native plants into private landscapes.
