Those who know me know I’m not a big fan of Shipyard Brewing Company. So, when I tell you that I really, really liked the new Bourbon Barrel Aged Monkey Fist India Pale Ale, you know that means something.

I find the Ringwood yeast Shipyard uses is overly noticeable, turning most of their beers into a buttery-flavored miss.

However, the Monkey Fist IPA, aged in Bourbon barrels is a true treat. The Bourbon hides the butter flavor from the yeast, and really lets the hops shine through. You get both earthy and citrsuy hops, and the oakiness really comes through.

What’s even more amazing than the fact that I really like this beer, is I don’t like the normal Monkey Fist and I typically don’t like barrel-aged IPAs. However, this came together in just the right way. My hat (if I had one) is off toward  Try this one, you’ll probably be as surprised as me.
