  • The Shawnee Chapter of the Illinois Audubon Society Hummingbird Festival at the Lindgren Home on Nine Wishes Road will be held from 9 a.m. to Noon on Saturday, July 20. The festival will provide an opportunity to see these unique birds up close during the capture and banding of these fascinating creatures.
Cathie Hutcheson, Master Permit Bander will be capturing and banding the birds. The hummingbirds will be captured by a unique trapping mechanism, held only long enough to record basic data, then released. The purpose of banding is to determine how far into Mexico or Central America the birds go for the winter, where they stop during their travels, how long they live, and whether they come back to the same sites year after year.
The Shawnee Chapter of the Illinois Audubon Society, sponsor of the festival, will have Information Stations about Gardening for Hummingbirds and Care and Feeding of Hummingbirds as well as Kids' Activities available. They will also have hummingbird merchandise such as T-shirts, feeders and accessories available for purchase.
Attendees should consider bringing their own chair to sit on, drinking water, hat, and sunscreen. The Fest officially ends at noon, but the Lundgrens invite everyone to stay after to simply sit and enjoy watching the hummingbirds at the feeders. So plan to bring a picnic lunch and take advantage of this awesome invitation.
In case of rain, the Fest will take place the following Saturday, July 27. Also, there are no public restrooms available at the site of the Fest.
Directions: From Rte 146 north of Golconda turn west on the Eddyville Road; go a 1/2 mile to Nine Wishes Ranch Road; turn south (left); go a 1/2 mile to the end of the road. Lindgren's is the only house on the road. Call Terri at 618-521-1030 if you need help finding the location.
