Miners starting pitcher Blake Nation took a no-hitter into the bottom of the ninth inning and was two outs away until ThunderBolts second baseman Mike Torres hit a single with one out to break up the bid for the no-hitter.
The Miners held on to win the game 2-1 and improve to 27-20 on the season.
Nation pitched 8 1/3 innings and allowed one run off one hit to stay perfect now 7-0 on the season.
The game was scoreless until the top of the ninth inning when the Miners finally struck first.
After a single by Cannon Lester and a sacrifice bunt by Tyler Hall off ThunderBolts reliever Jake Roberts, Carlos Colmenares hit a sacrifice bunt to reach first base and score Lester on the play to give the Miners a 1-0 lead.
With Hall moving to third base and Colmenares advancing to second on a throwing error by Roberts, Steven Liddle hit a sacrifice fly to score Hall and give the Miners a 2-0 lead.
Nation took the mound in the bottom of the ninth inning and struck out Nathan Pittman to put himself in position for the final two outs. However, Torres would single and Zach Aakhus walked to put runners on first and second base.
Nation left the game for Race Parmenter who entered the game to record the final two outs. After a RBI single by Ryan Soares to bring the ThunderBolts within one run, Parmenter struck out Evan Button. The final out came on a put out to retire Soares after a ball put in play by Andrew Brauer. Parmenter earned his third save.
Southern Illinois will be facing an old friend on Thursday as Brian Oliver (2-5, 5.81 ERA) will be on the mound for the Windy City ThunderBolts and Dayne Quist (4-2, 2.46 ERA) will be on the mound for the Miners. First pitch will get underway at 7:05 p.m. from Standard Bank Stadium.
