A 50-year-old McLeansboro man was killed Wednesday evening in a state Route 14 accident — the fourth traffic fatality in Franklin County since June 25.
The deceased driver is identified as Lavern F. Johnson Jr.
Franklin County Coroner Marty Leffler reported that he was notified at 9:34 p.m. Wednesday of a motor vehicle accident involving a tractor pulling a bean drill, two automobiles and a pedestrian, in which one of the drivers of one of the vehicles was killed.
The Franklin County Sheriff's Department received a 9-1-1 call reporting the accident, and then a second call was received, adding a pedestrian to the mix.
Sheriff's deputies and the Ewing-Northern Fire Protection District firefighters discovered a tractor pulling a bean drill that was westbound on state Route 14, a quarter mile east of North Thompsonville Road, was struck by a vehicle traveling east, causing fatal injuries to the driver of the vehicle.
According to witnesses, a passerby stopped to direct traffic when a second vehicle struck the now-stopped tractor and bean drill, the first vehicle and the pedestrian directing traffic.
Johnson died upon impact of the accident. The driver of the second vehicle was airlifted from the scene. The pedestrian was taken by Abbott Ambulance to the Franklin Hospital in Benton. The driver of the tractor was shaken up, but had no apparent injuries.
The Franklin County Sheriff's Department is investigating the accident.
According to the coroner, an autopsy will be performed on the victim.
No other information is available at this time.
Leffler said this is the fourth fatality involving some type of vehicle accident in Franklin County since June 25th.
