The Southern Illinois Miners are proud to announce that first-baseman/outfielder Gerardo Avila, third-baseman Carlos Mendez and starting pitcher Preston Vancil have been voted to the 2013 All-Star Game. The votes came from all 14 league general managers, field managers, coaching staffs, broadcasters and local members of the media. The Washington Wild Things and CONSOL Energy Park will be the host of the 2013 All-Star Game Presented by 84 Lumber.
"I am really thrilled for all our guys", said Miners manager Mike Pinto. "They are all very deserving. It is an honor to represent your team in the league's showcase."
Gerardo Avila is in his second season with the Miners and will be a reserve in the All-Star Game. Avila is batting .329 on the season, which is currently third overall in the Frontier League. He has hit three home runs and drove in 23 runs. He's recorded 46 hits, which is second on the team behind fellow All-Star selection Carlos Mendez. Avila has also hit five doubles, one triple and recorded an on-base percentage of .394.
Carlos Mendez is in his second season with the Miners and will be a reserve in the All-Star Game. Mendez is currently fifth in the league with a batting average of .324 and leads the league with 56 hits. Along with his 56 total hits, seven of them have been hit for doubles, two for triples and one homerun. Mendez drove in 24 runs and is tied for the team lead with Ken Gregory.
Preston Vancil is in his first season with the Miners signing with the team on June 1st. The starting pitcher is 5-1 on the season with a 1.94 ERA in seven starts. His 1.94 ERA is currently fourth in the league. He's logged 41 2/3 innings giving up 32 hits and only allowing eleven runs (nine earned). He's walked 19 batters and recorded 24 strikeouts. Opponents are batting .221 against him on the season.
