  • Lewie E. Sweat, age 94, of Harrisburg, passed away at 12:05 a.m. Saturday, July 6, 2013, at Harrisburg Medical Center, following a brief illness.

  • Lewie E. Sweat, age 94, of Harrisburg, passed away at 12:05 a.m. Saturday, July 6, 2013, at Harrisburg Medical Center, following a brief illness.
    He was born on Nov. 20, 1918, in Ridgway, to the late Cecil and Nellie (Barnett) Sweat. He enlisted in the United States Navy following the attack on Pearl Harbor.  He served in the Navy Seabees in the South Pacific for three years. Following his military service, he was employed by Pankey Brothers Bakery, Sunbeam Bakery, and Raleigh Packing Company as a salesman for many years. He then worked as a bakery goods salesman for Kermit Coffee. He also worked as a bus aide for RIDES Transportation and as a custodial/cafeteria assistant at West Side School for several years.  Known as “Grandpa” he was loved and adored by hundreds of students and school staff.
    Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Gary Sweat and wife Karen of Oblong, and Steve Sweat and wife Dixie of Harrisburg; five grandchildren, Keri Schacht of Charlotte, N.C., John Sweat of Terra Haute, Ind., Emily Rann of Harrisburg, Tracy Sweat of Harrisburg and Jamie Sweat of Harrisburg; five great-grandchildren, Leah and Justin Schacht, of Charlotte, N.C., Skyla, Gavin, and Makenna Rann of Harrisburg; sister-in-law, Edna Ruth and husband Loren Bean of Eldorado; special friend and caregiver, Shelby Adams of Harrisburg.
    He was preceded in death by his parents, infant son, Charles Edward Sweat, two sisters, Stella Blake and Opal McDaniel; two brothers, William “Bill” Sweat, and James “Jimmy” Sweat. On July 26, 1980, his wife of forty years, Ethel Sweat, passed away after a lengthy battle with cancer.
    Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, July 10, 2013, at Reed Funeral Chapel in Harrisburg. The Rev. Jimmie Lambert will officiate. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery at Equality. Military graveside rites will be conducted by the Harrisburg and Carrier Mills American Legions and the National Guard.  Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday, July 10, 2013, at Reed Funeral Chapel in Harrisburg. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois and envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
