  • Funeral services are pending for a man who authorities believe died of natural causes before his body was found along a southern Illinois trail.
Jackson County Coroner Thomas Kupferer says 69-year-old Robert Tyson of Murphysboro was found dead Friday by mountain bikers on a trail near Cedar Lake.
Tyson had been reported missing by family members who grew worried after he had not returned home from doing trail maintenance in the area near a Pomona boat launch.
His body was found 3 miles up a trail north of where his car was parked.
Kupferer says Tyson likely died of a heart attack. No autopsy is planned.
Tyson was a regular hiker on the River-to-River Trail Society’s spring and fall hikes and led Sunday hikes for the Sierra Club throughout the year.
He was also a musician performing as “Uncle Bob,” wearing a train conductor’s hat as he sang covers of Jimmy Rodgers songs and other folk and western classics.
Funeral arrangements are pending with Crain Funeral Home in Murphysboro.
