  • The Gallatin County Wellness Center reopened June 17 with funding help from the Delta Regional Authority.
Hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and the center is offering a special on back to school physicals for $25.
The DRA initiated a $78,750 investment to help reopen the school-based wellness center for the Gallatin County School District, according to a release from the DRA.
The Gallatin County Wellness Center had been opened until recently when it was forced to discontinue services due to lack of resources and available medical personnel. Through a partnership between the Gallatin County School District, the Egyptian Health Department and support from the Delta Regional Authority, the wellness center will now have the resources to provide medical services to students and their families. The wellness center, located in the Gallatin County K-12 Educational Complex, will have a medical doctor, a family nurse practitioner, and licensed professional nurse.
This school-based health center will not only provide health care to students where they need it – including general care, counseling services, and check-ups – but serve a rural community that is considered medically underserved and a Healthcare Provider Shortage Area. The wellness center expects to serve 400 students, parents, and community members over the course of the upcoming year.
"A health community means a community poised to create jobs and support a vibrant economy," DRA Chairman Chris Masingill said, in a prepared release. "This investment will increase access to quality health care for our most underserved communities."
"Community health centers like the Gallatin County Wellness Center are a valuable resource for families in rural and medically underserved areas," U.S. Senator Dick Durbin said, in the prepared release. "Thanks to the dedication of local partners and with the help of federal resources, the Gallatin County Wellness Center will once more open its doors to provide high-quality healthcare to the residents of Southern Illinois."
"Access to health care is limited in many rural areas, and a school-based clinic can be vital to children's health," U.S. Congressman John Shimkus said, in the prepared release. "I applaud DRA, the school district, and the health department for their pro-active action to re-open this clinic."
