  • Walter Blaine "W.B." Pulliam Jr. passed away on June 21, 2013, at the Carrier Mills Nursing Home.
W.B. was born on Aug. 17, 1918, in Long Branch Township, Saline County, to Walter Blaine Pulliam and Maud Cantrell Pulliam.
W.B. married Fern Heathman on Dec. 21, 1940. W.B. and Fern were married 66 years, before Fern passed away on Jan. 14, 2007. Two children were born to them, Larry Ray and Priscilla Ann.
W.B. was a farmer by trade his entire life. They also raised registered Black Angus cattle. W.B. was a Dekalb Seed Corn Dealer for many years. He was one of the founders of Galatia State Bank, served on the Board of Directors, and was the last remaining living director. W.B. served on the board of Southeastern Illinois Electric Cooperative for many years. He was a Born Again Christian and member and deacon of New Hope Missionary Baptist Church.
W.B. is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Priscilla Ann Barnes and Curtis R. Barnes; grandson, Timothy P. Barnes; special family friend, Norman Wiemken, all of rural Galatia; niece, Dene Pulliam; and grandniece, Debbie Clore of Carrier Mills.
Walter Blaine Pulliam Jr. was predeceased by his wife, Fern Pulliam; infant son, Larry Ray; his father and mother; special nephew, Mack Pulliam; and grandniece, Maurita Barger.
W.B. Pulliam was a good husband, father, friend and neighbor. He liked to laugh and there was always a seat at his kitchen table, whether your visit was planned or not. He could be counted upon to help his neighbors in time of need.
We wish to thank the staff at Carrier Mills Nursing Home for all their care and concern during the time W.B. was a resident, and especially during his final days. And we thank Hospice of Southern Illinois for their comfort and care. For anyone wishing to give a donation in memory of W.B. Pulliam, we would suggest Hospice of Southern Illinois, Inc. or any charity of your choice.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 25, 2013, at Sloan Funeral Home in Galatia, followed by burial in Raleigh Masonic Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday, June 24, 2013, at Sloan Funeral Home, Galatia.
