Carl W. Raben, age 93 of Galatia, passed away at 4:05 a.m. Tuesday, June 11, 2013, at Harrisburg Medical Center.
Carl was born on Sunday, Nov. 16, 1919, in Ridgway to the late Leo T. and Millie (Bahl) Raben. He married the former Mary Metten of DuQuoin on Sept. 22, 1945, and she survives in Galatia.
Carl was a farmer, and an Army veteran and served as part of a five man radar team on the Aleutian Islands during World War II. Carl was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Harrisburg, where he sang in the church choir and was active in the PreCana Marriage Counseling Team. Carl was a charter member of the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus Madonna Council No. 3936. Carl was also formerly active with the local 4-H, and he was an avid Bearcats basketball supporter.
Carl is survived by his wife Mary Raben; seven children, Carla Pritchett and husband Rusty of Galatia, Mary Ann Barrett and husband Larry of Eldorado, Patty Harris and husband Dan of Annapolis, Md., John Raben and wife Sarah of Chatham, Jackie Schwartz and husband Mark of Galatia, Dr. Steve Raben and wife Nancy of Mascoutah and Tom Raben and wife Kristi of Evansville, Ind.; 23 grandchildren, Paula Cullum, Bill Pritchett, Keith Pritchett, Mary Rose Pritchett, Barbara Haenel, Michael Barrett, David Barrett, Chris Harris, Brion Harris, Greg Harris, Kate Harris, Joe Raben, Leigh Raben, Norah Raben, Caleb Schwartz, Jenna Schwartz, Jaylyn Schwartz, Josh Raben, Jacob Raben, Jordan Raben, Jared Raben, Andrew Raben and Kelsi Raben; 14 great-grandchildren, Kendra Cullum, Jada Cullum, Luke Pritchett, Cecilia Pritchett, Joseph Pritchett, Alexa Haenel, Alexandria Caldwell, Sara Jordan Caldwell, Addi Harris, Jay Harris, Scarlett Harris, Graham Harris, Nash Raben and Parker Betts; and several nieces and nephews.
Carl was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Margaret Hatfield; brothers, Dennis Raben, James Raben, Cyril Raben; and sister, Rosemary Taggart.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 15, 2013, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Harrisburg. Father Tom Barrett and Father Abraham Adejoh will officiate. Burial will follow in Sunset Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, June 14, 2013, at Reed Funeral Chapel in Harrisburg. Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or the Harrisburg Knights of Columbus.
