The CEO of the company presented him with a watch and a speech, both to applause from fellow workers.
When he turned 65 plus a day, he laid that watch on a smooth stone, took a less smooth stone, and smashed the timepiece into pieces. As some enjoy opera—an art form he dismissed as high class squealing—so the retiree regaled in the gnat swarm of tiny screws and springs, of glass crushed to fineness of sand.
Decades late, he had struck a blow for liberty.
Two days into his 65th year he realized he needed a watch, but that’s another story.
This tale has no moral. It also has no point. Even so, it’s one the teller told too many times to count, and always with gusto tinged with sadness.
