  • Three environmental groups are asking state regulators to take away a central Illinois mine's wastewater discharge permit.
Prairie Rivers Network, the Illinois Chapter of the Sierra Club and the Environmental Law and Policy Center are appealing a new permit recently granted to the Industry Mine. The groups say in their filing this week with the Illinois Pollution Control Board that the mine has more than 600 violations of the permit's terms.
The groups say the surface mine near the town of Industry was granted a new permit by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency this spring in spite of millions of dollars in pending fines. Industry is about 70 miles southwest of Peoria.
Messages left with mine-owner Springfield Coal Co. and the Illinois EPA were not immediately returned.
