  • James Marcellus Vinyard, 88, of Murphysboro, passed away at 4:46 p.m. Friday, May 31, 2013, at the Rehab and Care Center of Jackson County, Murphysboro.

  • James Marcellus Vinyard, 88, of Murphysboro, passed away at 4:46 p.m. Friday, May 31, 2013, at the Rehab and Care Center of Jackson County, Murphysboro.
    James was born on May 28, 1925, in Elizabethtown, to Clyde Vinyard and Etta (Tyer) Vinyard.
    He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and then retired, after 38 years of service, from the U.S. Army.
    Vinyard was a member and Deacon of Elm Street Baptist Church in Murphysboro.
    Jim married Phyllis Jean Dillard on Nov. 21, 1945, in Harrisburg and she survives.
    Other survivors include one son, Derry Ray Vinyard and his wife Lois Vinyard of Chester; two grandsons, Ryan Ashley Vinyard and his wife Laura Vinyard of St. Charles, Mo., and Eric Grant Vinyard of Peoria; and one brother Richard C. Vinyard of Murphysboro.
    He was preceded in death by one son, David Marcellus Vinyard; one brother, Thomas Jefferson Vinyard; one sister, Ruth E. Bush; and his parents.
    His body will be cremated and a memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 6, 2013, at Elm Street Baptist Church in Murphysboro with Ronald Shadowens officiating and burial will be at Lindale Memorial Gardens in Eldorado. Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. at the church on Thursday. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Elm Street Baptist Church or TIP Hospice. Pettett Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
