  • The driver of a 1999 red Toyota Camry said he fell asleep at the wheel while driving south on U.S. Route 45 near Wilson Street in Enfield Thursday night, according to a release from the Illinois State Police.
At 10:31 p.m. Richard Crane, 31, Evansville, Ind., said he fell asleep at the wheel and drifted into the northbound lane. Thomas A. Maramba, 39, McLeansboro was driving a 2013 Freightliner semi tractor-trailer in the northbound lane and said he saw the Toyota enter his lane of travel and swerved to avoid it, according to the release.
Crane reported he awoke and saw the headlights in his path and swerved to the right. The front passenger side of the Toyota struck the passenger side of the truck. The Toyota then left the roadway and struck a utility pole.
Crane and his passenger, Linda D. Crane, 49, Evansville, Ind., both sustained minor injuries and were transported to Hamilton Memorial Hospital for treatment. Maramba was not injured in the crash.
Occupants of both vehicles were wearing seatbelts.
Crane was cited for improper lane usage.
The Illinois State Police was assisted at the crash scene by the Enfield Police Department, Norris City Police Department, White County Sheriff's Department, Enfield Fire Department and Enfield First Responders.
