The rally caps were out in full force, but the hole that Harrisburg had to climb out of was just too deep.
In the Class 2A Johnston City Regional Saturday, West Frankfort built an early 9-0 lead off Harrisburg starter Hanna Jones.
The result was a hard pill to swallow just days after the Bulldogs had pulled off the upset of knocking off No. 1 seeded Carmi as they fell to the Redbirds 11-8 in the title tilt.
West Frankfort batted around in the first inning as they scored five runs and finished with four more in the second when they sent eight to the plate.
Harrisburg's rally started in the third inning when they grabbed three runs.
Kaitlyn Hutchison drove in a run with a sac-fly and Brittany Reynolds singled to score a pair of runs.
West Frankfort got another run in the third, but again, Harrisburg closed the gap when they got a three-run home run from Jones in the fourth, scoring Banks and Kaitlyn Keith, while Reynolds ripped a two-run shot, scoring Hutchison to make it 10-8.
It was at this point that the Harrisburg coaching staff believed they were going to make hay against the Redbirds and pitcher Kayla Piersol, but West Frankfort head coach Jack Calvert made the switch, replacing Piersol with Sarah Aldridge.
Aldridge pitched 3 1/3 innings. giving up just one hit and one walk, while striking out one
West Frankfort was able to tack on one more run in the fifth to close out the contest.
Piersol got the win in the circle for West Frankfort, giving up eight runs on eight hits, while striking out one and walking three. Jones (12-13) took the loss, allowing 10 earned runs on nine hits, while striking out five and walking four.
Harrisburg closes out the year 13-20, while Harrisburg will play Nashville Tuesday in the Du Quoin Sectional.
