Gallatin County and Pope County squared off in an all-GEC Regional final at Pope County Saturday, where the Hawks claimed their third-straight regional crown with a tight 3-2 victory.
Pope County got on the board in the first inning behind a RBI double by Travis Thompson.
Gallatin responded in the fourth after a lead-off walk to Wes McGuire, fellow Senior Daine Hish launched a 2-run shot well over the right field fence to give the Hawks their first lead of the game.
Pope came back with a run in the fifth on a bases loaded walk to tie the score, but Hawks starter Wes McGuire pitched out of the jam.
McGuire, just an inning later led off the sixth and hit a solo home run to give the Hawks back the one run lead.
Zach McGuire picked up the win in relief tossing two perfect innings and Pirate starter Austin Ferrell took the loss.
"We really had to battle out there today and we made some mistakes," Gallatin County head coach Dave Cruson said. "That could have cost us, but we were able to hang in and pull out the win.
"Wes didn't have a his best stuff today and was battling a bit of sore back, but he gave us 5 strong innings and Zach really came in a shut things down in the final two. Our Seniors really stepped up today with the homers, I don't think they are quite ready to call it a career yet."
Gallatin improves to 26-3 and will advance to the Goreville Sectional to play Cobden on Wednesday.
