  • Five people talked out of Shawnee National Forest

  • Saline County Central Dispatch assisted five Hardin County residents in getting out of the Shawnee National Forest, Sunday evening.
    Central Dispatch received a 9-1-1 call from a Kayla Roberts, stating that they had been hiking near Burden Falls in northern Pope County and were now in a field, near the Pope-Saline County line when she called. The call was made at 8:26 p.m. Sunday.
    Saline County E-911 Telecommunicator Tammy Norris, kept Roberts on the phone and was able to help her and her party walk out of the remote area in Southwest Saline County near Stonefort, Roberts party, included three other adults and a two-year old child.
    Norris was able to plot Robert from Robert’s cell phone onto the digital mapping at Saline County Central Dispatch, the mapping is by Spatial Data Research (SDR) and Norris was able to give turn by turn directions until the party made their way out of the Shawnee National Forest and onto a county road, where Saline County Deputy Jared Campbell met up with them. The party traveled close to a mile from when they called until they were located.
    The party was checked out by Saline County EMS, with no injuries before they were taken back to their vehicle near Burden Falls in Pope County. The party members were from Hardin County.
    Saline County Sheriff Keith Brown reminds anyone traveling into the Shawnee National Forest, that they should bring along bottled water, flashlights and other items, in case they do get lost. “It may take some time to get someone to the area for a rescue and bad things, such as falls or bites can happen quickly in the remote areas of the Shawnee National Forest, be prepared for you go,” said Sheriff Keith Brown.
    Pope County Sheriff’s Office assisted with the call.
