  • County residents may have their old prescription medications disposed of 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Saline County Courthouse parking lot.
The twice-a-year event is a partnership between the Saline County Sheriff’s Office, the Drug Enforcement Agency and the Egyptian Health Department for the purpose of prescription medication disposal, according to a release from the sheriff's office.
During the past five take back events held by the DEA around the United States and with over 3,000 law enforcement agencies participating, Americans turned in over 2 millions pounds or 1,018 tons of expired or unused prescription medications.
National Prescription Drug Take Back Day addresses a vital public safety and public health issue.
More than 7 million Americans currently abuse prescription drugs, according to the 2009 Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’’s National Survey on Drug Use and Health. Each day, approximately, 2,500 teens use prescription drugs to get high for the first time according to the Partnership for a Drug Free America. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including the home medicine cabinet.
In addition, it is recommended not to flush or throw unused or unwanted prescription medications down the drain or in the trash, both pose a potential safety and health hazards.
