Scrabble players from all around Southern Illinois will gather at Morello's Pizza and Grill 7 p.m. Saturday to compete in the 7th Annual Scrabble Tournament sponsored by Habitat For Humanity Saline County chapter.
President Bruce Boone said that the tournament currently has 15 teams entered and that the goal is to sign up 20 by Saturday night.
Teams can have up to six players.
The tournament play follows different rules than the standard game of Scrabble.
There will be three 20 minute rounds.
Each team gets a board with a number of preset words on it. Everyone has the same preset words.
The teams get to use 100 tiles to make as many words and score as many points as they can in 20 minutes.
The team with the highest score after three rounds will be awarded the traveling plaque and allowed to display it in their business for one year. Their team name will be engraved on the plaque as the 2013 winners.
The entry fee for a team is $200. Admission for spectators is $10 per person.
During the tournament there will be a silent auction and a raffle and a Habitat property in Raleigh will be put up for sale.
Habitat can build a home with a partner family's help for $40,000. They finished their last home in Harrisburg in Oct. of 2012.
