  • For Joe Clark it's practically a dream come true.
The Eldorado native, who played for the Eagles in high school and has continued to be a part of the program in recent years, serving as an assistant coach in football and baseball, was named the school's head boys' basketball coach Thursday night at the Eldorado School Board meeting.
Clark, 34, graduated from Eldorado High School in 1997 and replaces TJ Zurliene his resignation was accepted from the EHS school board back in March.
Clark went on to play football at McKendree College and played a year of junior varsity basketball for the Bearcats.
Prior to Zurliene, Eldorado was led by Greg Goodley, who now serves as the school's athletic director and who Clark spent two years playing varsity basketball for.
That time proved to be very crucial for Clark, who says there are positives and negatives he can take away " Clark said of Goodley. "I played for him, I coached for him and probably 90 percent of what I know came from coach Goodley.
"That being said, I feel like in some ways I'm limited in my knowledge, so I need to get around some other coaches and get some different perspectives and see what works for me."
Clark says he has not yet met with any of his players, a move he believes will come up next week. As far as his first order of business is concerned, Clark intends to look at player development.
"I don't think it's too late in the game to going. I'll come up with a summer schedule and dive right in and start getting after it," Clark said. "This is an exciting opportunity, being from Eldorado, playing here, coaching here and this is something that even myself and Brandon Hampton (head football coach) talk about is this is something we dreamed about when we were kids."
Clark, who also serves as one of Hampton's top assistant's for football, will stay in that role.
Clark admits that while he might have a lot on his plate, his desire to do what he loves is only attainable because of his relationship with his wife, Ashley.
"She's a great woman, mother and friend. I couldn't ask for a more supportive wife and someone to take care of Draxtyn, Davyn and Owen."
In addition to player development, Clark said part of his agenda will be building a coaching staff, as well as, making upgrades to the facilities at Duff-Kingston Gymnasium.
Clark also confirmed that Eldorado will be a part of this year's Harrisburg Invitational to start the season and the Eagles will host Harrisburg at Duff-Kingston on January 11.
