Drivers Education Instructor Joe Clark was appointed to the position of High School Basketball Coach Thursday evening at the regularly scheduled meeting of the Eldorado School Board. The appointment was announced at 10:50 p.m. after a closed session regarding employment of personnel.
Bradley Blake was hired as principal of the elementary school with a salary of $60,000 per year.
Brittany English was appointed cheerleader sponsor. She is a relative of School Superintendent Gary Siebert and Siebert excused himself from any discussion of her candidacy and left the room while it was being discussed.
During the public comments session at the beginning of the meeting teacher David Jones reported that the coal mining class was having success in securing scholarships for its students with two students receiving full scholarships and one receiving a partial scholarship.
"It's a good stepping stone into the coal mining industry," said Jones. "When I was in high school there wasn't this kind of opportunity."
The scholarships are to SIC and the students, after completion of their schooling, will be rated as experienced miners when they apply for work at the mines.
Approval of the treasurer's report was unanimous with Siebert saying that state funding was down this year as it was last year and would be lower still next year.
Discussion of changes to the school calendar was tabled until a later meeting.
A request to advertise for bids for the 2013-14 school year for dairy products, bakery products, fuel for buses, fire extinguishers and trash hauling was approved.
Three field trip requests were approved. One was for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes to travel to Evansville for skating, an IMAX movie and a trip to the mall.
Another was for the Chess Club to attend a St. Louis Cardinals game and the third was for Scholar Bowl participants to travel to Holiday World.
Approval was given for the Mens Club to put on a fireworks display at the sports complex on July 6, 2013.
The date and time for a reorganizational meeting was set for 7 p.m. May 7, 2013.
The usual practice of accepting SIUC student teachers was approved.
Board approval was given for a hearing to discuss amending the 2012-13 budget on June 20, 2013.
