  • Prep Baseball: Career win No. 650 for Thompson as Bulldogs down Carmi

  • Jay Thompson has seen lots of baseball over the years. The Hall of Fame head coach added another impressive line to his resume with Harrisburg’s 8-2 win at Carmi-White County Wednesday afternoon.
    The victory marked the 650th win in the career of the Harrisburg head baseball coach.
    Sophomore Matthew Phipps worked six shutout innings for the Bulldogs (17-2), who ran their season-best winning streak to nine straight.
    Phipps allowed just two hits, struck out six and walked none on the day.
    Harrisburg blew open the game by hitting around and scoring six runs in the top of the sixth inning.
    Six different HHS players collected at least one hit on the afternoon, including Cody Hall, who finished 2-for-4 with two RBI.
    Sophomore Cooper Thompson had two RBI while Ryne Roper, Ryan Luce and Chris Willsey all drove in runs for Harrisburg.
    Harrisburg started the scoring with lone unearned runs in both the third and fourth innings off of Carmi reliever Dakota Jolley.
    Carmi, who was shutout at Eldorado a day earlier, committed five errors Wednesday afternoon, including two in the six-run top of the sixth for Harrisburg.
    Junior lefty Blake Buchanan was touched up for two unearned runs in the bottom of the seventh when Carmi (5-6) finally got on the board.
    Harrisburg is scheduled to host West Frankfort in its next to last conference game Friday afternoon at Dorris Heights before welcoming in Du Quoin for a weekend twin bill on Saturday.
    Goreville 14, Carrier Mills 1
    GOREVILLE - Darren Betz took took the loss for Carrier Mills-Stonefort Wednesday, going five innings and giving up 14 runs on 11 hits with four strikeouts and two walks.
    The Wildcats had just three hits on the day, plating one run in the first inning.
    Carrier Mills-Stonefort is slated to host NOCE today (Thursday) at 4:30 p.m.
