  • A semi tractor-trailer driver was killed when he drove his vehicle off the road into a tree 1 mile north of Herod Tuesday night.
The truck drove off the road, struck a tree and overturned, Trooper Michael E. Usher, Safety Education Officer of the Illinois State Police said Wednesday morning.
Driver Scott D. Goss, 44, of Harrisburg, was initially transported to Harrisburg Medical Center. He died Wednesday as a result of his injuries.
The truck was a 2011 white International with a coal trailer and the load of coal was dumped.
Arrangements are pending at Reed Funeral Chapel, according to the funeral home.
This is the second crash of a coal hauler in the Herod area in April.
At 10:20 a.m. April 11 Craig W. Bryan, 42, Benton, was driving south on state Route 34 south of Herod when a front left wheel detached, according to the ISP. The truck crossed the center line, ran off the left side of the road and struck several trees.
He was transported to Hardin County Hospital by Hardin County EMS.
Bryan received a citation for MCS violation — the hood was not securely fastened, according to the ISP.
