  • Eldorado voters by a wide margin said “Yes” to the opportunity to buy electricity from a source other than Ameren.
Nick Hill of Select Energy has made pitches to council to accept electricity through his company that represents a dozen or more communities in Southern Illinois including Du Quoin, Pinckneyville, Marion, West Frankfort and Carbondale. Hill has said the more communities represented by Select Energy the greater the savings to all can be as the company buys electricity in bulk.
The voters say Hill’s pitch worked, with 351, 60 percent, voting yes and 229, 39 percent voting no.
Anyone can opt out of Select Energy’s services and anyone can continue to receive power through Ameren, a company whose rates are set by state regulators.
