  • Struggling to make a statement, The Galatia-Thompsonville softball team figured out how Thursday and it came off the bat of Elizabeth Sloan.
The Bearcat sophomore blasted a two-run home run in the first inning to help erase a one-run deficit as Galatia-Thompsonville won 5-2 over Hardin County.
Considered one of the top schools in 1A, Galatia-Thompsonville head coach Kevin Lewis was more than proud of his ballclubs performance.
"(Krysta) Rokosh is one of the top pitchers in this area. I mean, she's already signed with Wabash Valley and for us to get control of her in the early going, I think really helped us set the tone."
The Bearcats tacked on two more runs in the second inning and added another run in the fifth, while Hardin County put up one more run in the fourth.
Alyssa Bond got the win on the mound for Galatia-Thompsonville (7-4, 4-0 GEC) as she went the distance, allowing seven hits and one earned run, while striking out eight and walking one.
"Alyssa's curve ball and change up were really on today," Lewis said. "That's her first complete game of the season and it was good for us to see she could go the distance."
Sloan finished 1-for-2 at the plate with three RBIs, while Baylee Blackburn finsihed 2-for-3 and Kylee Brown was 1-for-3 with an RBI.
Galatia-Thompsonville will take part in this weekend's Waltonville Tournament and will travel to Pope County Tuesday for a battle of unbeatens in the GEC, starting at 4:30 p.m.
    Herrin 7, Harrisburg 0
HARRISBURG - Taylor Winn went 3-for-3 at the plate with a home run and three RBIs for Herrin, while picking up the victory in the circle as Herrin shut out Harrisburg 7-0 Thursday.
Winn gave up one hit to the Bulldogs (5-6, 0-3 SIRR), that coming courtesy of Hannah Davis.
Ashley Ferrell took the loss for Harrisburg as the junior allowed five earned runs on 10 hits. Ferrell stuck out five and walked four.
    Hamilton County 3, Eldorado 1
McLEANSBORO - Hamilton County rallied for two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to beat Eldorado 3-1 Thursday in Black Diamond Conference softball action.
Hamilton County grabbed a quick 1-0 lead after the first inning, but Eldorado knotted the score at 1-all in the top half of the fourth inning when Caitlyn Stafford scored for the Eagles.
Stafford finished 1-for-3 on the day for Eldorado, while Charley Lowry was also 1-for-3. Cassidy Morris went 1-for-2 in a designated hitters role and Stephanie Oker also finished 1-for-3.
