  • East Side musicians bring home the bacon

  • Kathy Hanrahan, music instructor at East Side School, is proud of her pupils’ performance Saturday, March 16 at the Illinois Grade School Music Association's district competition in Benton.
    The school's choir won a first place superior rating for their performance. Pupil Hayden Gaskins, 10, said, "We worked real hard to get ready to win."
    Alexis Cox, 10, said, "It felt good."
    "There were a lot kids performing solo," said Hanrahan.
    The students have been practicing after school once and sometimes twice a week to prepare for the competition she said.
    Winners were: Sophie Winkelman and Ashley Williams, first place flute solo; Colten Hallan, first place clarinet solo; Lydia Miller, first place alto saxophone; Sam Winkleman, first place xylophone; Sam Winkleman, first place snare drum solo; Sophie Winkleman and Brianna Belt, first place superior piano solo; Sam Winkleman, Ellie Rann of West Side School, Kierra Boyles, Olivia Wilson, Grayson Osman and Madeleine DeNeal; Sophie Winkleman, first place violin solo; Sophie Winkleman, Alex McRoy of eighth grade middle school, and Jasmine Teston of eighth grade middle school, first place vocal solo superior; Jasmine Teston and Alex McRoy of eighth grade middle school first place superior vocal duet and East Side Choir, first place superior choir.
