  • There are several places to buy guns and ammunition in Olney, but ammunition is getting hard to find at some businesses.
Walmart Supercenter sells a variety of guns and ammunition and they sell well, said Manager Jadon Payne. He said other Walmarts in the region sell them as well, including Effingham, Flora and Robinson.
State Route 130 Pawn owner Ken Jackson said his store also has good sales of guns and ammunition, but he noted it is difficult for anyone to buy ammunition right now because so many people are buying in bulk.
The .22-caliber long rifle is popular, but is also hard to find. When the store has some in stock, they usually go quickly.
“Right now, we're more of a gun shop than a pawn shop,” Jackson said.
The lack of ammunition has occurred recently.
“Everyone has hoarded within the last month or so,” Jackson said.
Rural King sells ammunition but has not been able to stock much of it.
“We don't have a whole lot right now,” said co-owner Kathy Leathers. “It would sell if we did.”
Leathers said companies have not been shipping much ammunition. She said she is unsure if that has to do with the Sandy Hook Elementary School mass shooting in Connecticut in December or a combination of that incident and a variety of other factors.
When more ammunition is available, it sells well, she said.
