  • Herbert Lee Shaw passed away on Sunday, March 3, 2013, at Carrier Mills Nursing Center in Carrier Mills.

  • Herbert Lee Shaw passed away on Sunday, March 3, 2013, at Carrier Mills Nursing Center in Carrier Mills.
    He was born in Shelbyville, Ky., on April 26, 1926, the son of Harold and Nora Shaw.  He married Helen J. Lane on July 4, 1955, in Corinth, Miss. She preceded him in death on Oct. 2, 2012.
    He was also preceded in death by his parents, his stepsister Ruby Charlene Conrad, and his oldest son, Gerald Lee Shaw on Feb. 18, 2013, as well as the following brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Kenneth and Kathryn Swearingen, Claud and Betty Ozment, Mary Behrends, Raymond Baptista, and niece LeAnn Youngren, and nephew James Swearingen.
    Herb is survived by his sons Dell Ray (Kathy) Shaw of Sunset Valley, Texas, and Michael Todd (Donnita) Shaw of Harrisburg, daughter-in-law Diana Shaw of East Peoria, grandchildren Tina (Pete) Wimberly, Nika (Teddy) Sisk, Gerald Lee Jr. (Jessica) Shaw, all of Missouri, Jose Shaw Dugger of Texas, Skyler Shaw and Dakota Shaw of East Peoria and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Also surviving are the following brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Henry Behrends of Peoria, Robert and Sue Coltrin, Jack and Sharon Lane, Martha Baptista, and Robert and Chali Lane, all of Harrisburg, and many, many nieces and nephews.
    Herb served in the U.S. Navy in World War II. During his tour, Herb had three ships sunk from under him! He worked as a research mechanic at Caterpillar, Inc. in Mossville and also owned and operated Shaw’s Towing in East Peoria for many years. He was a member of the UAW Local 974.
    According to Herb’s wishes, there will be no public services. Reed Funeral Chapel in Harrisburg is handling cremation rites and private family burial services will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions in Herb’s memory may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois, ­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­204 Halfway Road, Marion Ill. 62959.
