  • Gallatin County All South pitcher chooses SIC

  • Wes McGuire knows that his best days are still ahead of him.
That's not only good news for the Gallatin County High School senior, but even better news for the Southeastern Illinois Community College baseball team, where recently McGuire signed a National Letter of Intent to play baseball for the Falcons.
McGuire, a pitcher by nature for the Hawks, takes the mound at 6-foot-4 and expects to assume the same role when he goes to SIC.
Last season, McGuire finished with an ERA of 1.52 as he started 12 games for Gallatin County, working 78 full innings and striking out 107, while walking just 23.
In his career to this point, McGuire has an ERA of 2.53 with 16 complete games under his belt. He has struck out 198 and walked 53 in 154.2 innings pitched.
McGuire was named to the SIBCA All Star team in 2011 and 12, as well as the Greater Egyptian Conference in the same seasons. Last year, McGuire was named to the All South team.
"Physically, I know I'm not done maturing yet, so I really do believe that some of my best years are ahead of me," McGuire said. "I think once I can get into their workout program, I can and will add some velocity and hopefully work on my off speed."
SIC head coach Jeremy Irlbeck got a first hand look at Wes this past fall and fell in love quickly with what he saw.
He fully believes that McGuire will step in and make an immediate impact.
    McGuire believes the same.
"I think I'm an above average pitcher and I can take that over there. I know I am at the high school (level) and I just hope to be able to carry it over to SIC.
The biggest incentive for McGuire however is the fact that for a couple of more years, he will get to stay close to home.
"It's definitely one thing that I wanted to do; was to play baseball at the college level. I'm glad to be able to do it locally, where I can stay close to home and still get to see a lot of family and friends."
McGuire is still undecided on a major.
